What Herbs Are Used To Make Kidney Tea

Of all the research I could find on herbs used as a kidney tea these following herbs seemed to predominate in herbal kidney tea formulas. The herbs that seemed to be used most frequently were Alfalfa, Dandelion, Buchu, Slippery Elm, Uva Urisi, Nettle leaf and Juniper Berry.

The first herb I saw in many kidney tea concoctions was alfalfa. The powdered or dry leaves and flower heads are very nutritious. The leaves supply the most nutrition. Alfalfa is a source of protein, vitamin E and K. It is a source of minerals and nutrients including calcium, magnesium, potassium and Carotene. The dried flowers and leaves can be steeped in water for 10 minutes and drunk as a kidney cleanser. The Chinese have been using it since the 6th century for the elimination of kidney stones. The cleansing quality of alfalfa is contributed to the chlorophyll it contains. It is not recommended for people with chronic kidney disease or people that have lupus. If you have potassium medical issues it is not recommended to use either.

Dandelion was the next herb that I noticed that was used frequently in kidney tea. Dandelion tea is used as a kidney tonic because it can aid in moving uric acid buildup. It also serves as a diuretic for fluid build up and retention. It is rich in potassium, calcium, vitamin A, B as well as some phosphorus and iron. Dandelion leaf can be bought loose or in tea bags. All you have to do steep according to package directions as a kidney tea. This herb too should not be used without Medical Doctors supervision if you have any kind of chronic kidney disease.

Nettle is considered an excellent remedy for kidney problems. The dry leaves are used as a kidney tea. To prepare as a kidney tea, use 2/3 cup of boiling water, which is poured over 3 to 4 tsp of dried leaves or dried root and steep for 3 to 5 minutes. Drink three to four of these cups a day. An infusion can also be made with fresh nettle leaves. Always drink additional water along with the tea (at least 2 quarts per day). If you use the Nettle leaf Dry you use 2 to 4 grams, three times a day. Again for those with kidney disease Nettle should not be used without the supervision of a Medical Doctor.

Buchu leaf is also considered and excellent diuretic for kidney ailments. It is good to use when there is painful urination. Slippery Elm Bark is very good for cleaning and soothing the kidneys. Uva-Urisi is good for any infection in the kidneys. Juniper Berries are considered excellent for kidney ailments. It helps remove waste products from the blood stream.

Any of the herbs mentioned in this article can be purchased loose or in a tea bag. There are pre-made kidney teas available online and in health food stores. You can also combine any of the above herbs or use alone as a kidney tea therapy. However, I want to stress those with serious kidney conditions should not use any of these herbs without consulting their doctor first. The results could be disastrous.
